Once upon a time, like many Korean-born guys, I fulfilled my military duties. What sets my experience apart is my decision to apply for deployment overseas, specifically in the Greater Middle East. Back then, I didn't speak the local language. The closest I got was my B1 level French, which I picked up back in 7th grade. It wasn't exactly a simpler time - it's been many years since then - but looking back, I realize just how much I gained from that chapter of my life.
During my time overseas, I didn't just learn military tactics; I also picked up a few other skills, like playing the guitar. It's funny how life throws unexpected curveballs, isn't it? Despite being an extreme extrovert - a consistent ENFP - I never imagined I'd find myself grappling with PTSD symptoms after my discharge.
And during my time of service, I was a bit older than the rest, as I did my military service after my folks wanted me to serve, therefore renouncing our US residency. I was also the founding lead developer, building supply chain applications for freight forwarders. So I had to learn to let go and also learn to earn and make my journey, because nothing will be just given to you.
Since then, whenever life throws me a curveball or I face tough challenges, I find myself reflecting on those days of service. It's a reminder that life isn't always smooth sailing; it's meant to be tough. And sometimes, it's not just about us - it's about something bigger. So once again, I find myself reminding me to be grateful and to hold onto faith, even in the face of adversity.
