This guide is complied in an order that is for the most optimal reading experience for the Supermassive Universe. While most times it is referred to the Radiant Black universe, multiple titles have been released that are not radiant black so as the universe continues to grow so will this guide. (if needed).
Obviously, you can read the comics in any way you like but I do get this question a lot so I figured I'd make it accessible to even more people by giving them a place to start. as of writing this guide, no issue in this universe have surpassed issue 15, so it's still a really great time to get into the Super Massive universe.
Radiant Black is created by Kyle Higgins and Marcelo Costa.
Vol.1 is the origin story of Radiant Black and is where I started myself. Issues 1-5 will introduce Nathan and Marshal and their relationship with the Radiant Black Power. Issue 6 will introduce Radiant Red more in depth.
You may purchase a copy of vol.1 on amazon here.
There are two places to go after vol.1 but naturally I believe the most logical place to follow up with -
Vol. 2 will be the continuation of Vol. 1 (naturally). Issue 6-11 will dive more in depth about the powers of Radiant Black, and really show cases the life style of a super hero in the Super Massive world. Issue 12 much like issue 6 will showcase a different character known as Radiant Pink.
you may purchase Radiant Black Vol. 2 on amazon here.
it's here where things start to branch out to other titles but around this time is probably the best to read -
Radiant Red is created by the team who works on Radiant Black along with Cherish Chen and David Lafuente.
Radiant Red Follows the story of Satomi Shen continuing her narrative from Radiant Black issue 6. Issue 6 sort of acts as her introduction issue, while her mini series focuses on her own story and problems that exist outside of what ever is going on with Radiant Black.
Currently I this is still ongoing with the final issue still needing to be released at the time of this guide being written but 4 out of 5 should be out to enjoy.
you can check out the issues on amazon here.
it's at this point I highly recommend you do read this next issue after you've read all these I've listed. Radiant Red and Vol.2 can be read interchangeably without much issue but here you have to read -
Created by Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, Ryan Parrot, Franscesco Manna and Igor Monti.
Supermassive is an amazing one shot that I could recommend to anyone, even to people who have never read Radiant Black. This One-shot provides enough exposition for you to know the characters to carry the story along and present them all together as new to each other which makes it really accessible.
In this one shot you will meet Radiant Black, Rogue Sun, and Inferno Girl Red. The Trio teams up in the most stunning display of comic book art you will ever see and makes a fantastic experience to introduce the new Supermassive universe.
you can purchase a copy of Supermassive here.
While this is the first appearance of Rogue Sun, I highly recommend you read this one-shot first before you move on to -
Created by Ryan Parrot and Able.
This title continues the story that is established about the character back in Supermassive. The mantel of Rogue Sun takes a turn and must try to discover his place in this world that has supernatural threats.
I don't want to give too much away but I highly recommend you read supermassive before reading this.
This series is also currently ongoing, but this is the best place to start reading it after you've completed the rest of the list above.
you can check out the issues on amazon here.
There are still a handful of projects and ongoing titles you can get ready for in order to continue your experience with the Supermassive Universe.
Radiant Black I could argue is the main stay story to keep up with what's going on. at the time of writing this there is currently 15 issues of Radiant Black to read. the same could be said for Rouge Sun, as it is only 5 issues in.
I believe these titles will continue to be produced as on-going titles. from what it seems, every 6 issues will be compiled into the next volume of the series so if you enjoy the trade paper backs then you can always collect those or enjoy the new issues every month. (I do that myself.)
created by Erica D'urso, Matt Groom, Igor Monti and Becca Carey.
Inferno Girl Red is actually not released yet and should be hitting shelves sometime later this year. (2022) Currently it is delayed but more than likely we should see it sooner much rather than later. if you enjoyed Supermassive (one-shot) I'm sure you're gonna love this one.
It's not available for purchase but you can check out the old Kickstarter campaign here.
Dead Lucky is a new title being introduced into the Supermassive universe created by Melissa Flores and French Carlomagno.
Dead Lucky was introduced at the end of Supermassive and will be hitting shelves on August 3rd.
This one isn't absolutely needed to enjoy Radiant Black but if you're looking to value some Easter Eggs and see how that narrative purpose serves the story in future titles then I do recommend reading The C.O.W.L.
how does the C.O.W.L connect to Radiant Black? well, to keep it simple, both these series are written and created by Kyle Higgins.
you can check out The C.O.W.L. on amazon here.
I hope this guide helps someone get into the Supermassive comics! this is for sure my favorite comic book series currently and I am always looking for ways to help people get into it.
